Doug and Shelagh’s
Mount Baker Renovation
This 100-year-old Mount Baker craftsman home had been sorely neglected over the years and was in dire need of love. Denizen Construction performed a full-home interior and exterior renovation for Doug and Shelagh. Our Denizen Mount Baker Renovation is a wonderful “showcase” example of our design-build renovation capabilities.
“When we were first shopping for our first home, we had no ambition to undertake a “fixer upper” but that quickly changed when we found our historic Mount Baker neighborhood craftsman. We began to talk with Denizen before even making an offer on the house and it was their vision and expertise that allowed us to see through a situation that had scared away many other potential buyers”
“Now completely refinished, our 1923 home is better than ever with completely modernized kitchen, bathrooms, heating and air-conditioning and a complete overhaul of the floorplan and space layout. Taking what were small discontinuous rooms from last century and transforming the home into an open floorplan with a feel and flow that invites rather than excludes.
The main floor is unrecognizable with a completely new kitchen, fully modernized overhead lighting, remodeled bathroom, and new floors throughout. What was before a dark and cold unfinished basement is now a full guest suite with doors and windows opening onto a new back patio with views the historic Franklin High School neighborhood. The attic has been transformed from a small, cramped storage area with no lighting into a fantastically cozy space perfect for reading by the windows and is complete with two bedrooms with views of the downtown Seattle skyline.
On the outside of the house, all new windows, modern composite siding, and a fully reimagined aesthetic brought new life to the hard worn exterior. On top of the obvious updates, the house is now full of clever storage solutions that were seamlessly integrated in a way that made them feel as if the home was designed around them from the beginning.
Denizens’ attention to detail and execution of vision has allowed us to live in what feels like a brand-new home while maintaining the charm and character of our one hundred year old house.”

“We love our remodeled kitchen. We are foodies who love to cook and entertain. The first remodel of the kitchen, laundry area, and powder room was thirty years ago. Appliances were tired and needed replacing; more storage and counterspace was needed in the laundry room, and wood floors in these areas needed to be refinished or replaced with tile.
Laura of Denizen was able to very quickly note some changes that would make the kitchen area more open and usable. They were ideas we hadn’t even considered: moving the refrigerator, removing a stove/island surround, putting LED lighting under pass-through cabinets, changing one cabinet to a liquor storage unit and using pull out drawers throughout. The Denizen employees and subcontractors were always polite and easy to have in our home. The construction areas were sealed off from the rest of the house which kept dust to a minimum. The quality and expertise of the subcontractors was impressive. Laura’s attention to detail is an asset. She was very willing to let us take the lead on design details such as paint colors, wallpaper designs, tile and granite selection. As with any major remodel, there are ‘bumps in the road’. We were able to work with Laura and Chris Jolley to come to satisfactory conclusions.

No matter how many times we contacted you, you never made us feel less than important, no matter how trivial the issue or question we had may have been.
